the convergence of amesbury & salisbury mass with seabrook & south hampton
nh
which is simultaneously man aka the northernmost point of massachusetts
is marked by the humble manh pillar number 158 pictured zoomably here

& shown also zoomably on this topo
http://www.mytopo.com/maps/?lat=42.8868&lon=-70.91587&z=16
it is one of some 68 pillars installed in 1890 or 1898 at a 3mile offset
northward from the merrimack river
producing the peculiar curvature of manh in northeast mass & southeast nh
its location at nlat42d53m11s x wlong70d54m53s was intended to be exactly
3miles north of the northernmost point of the merrimack within
massachusetts which falls today at n42d50m34s5 x w70d55m1s
now whether owing to a change in the course of the river or not
the 3mile offset turns out to run about 2degrees west of due north & the
marker is today about 20 feet too far north as well
same rock without the overgrowth

indicates the state line was only guesstimated as of that date
& shows the position of the left bank of the merrimack river at the
northernmost point was indeed slightly different from today
whether owing to erosion or accretion i cant say for sure
but the 20foot differential suggests the bank has inched southward by
accretion
or the survey was slightly off to that extent
mass has 7 internal quadritown points of which 2 belong to concord
nh for its part enjoys dozens of them
with some towns having as many as 3
& even a quintipoint
